What material is best?
There are a variety of materials that can be used to construct a roof. Each have their pros and cons. Asphalt shingles are available in a variety of colors and inexpensive but have a shorter lifespan than other materials. Clay or concrete tile is energy-efficient and long-lasting but are very expensive and require a certain level of stability in your home’s foundation. Metal roofing is durable and reflects the sunlight away but is also very expensive. Slate roofs are durable and fire-resistant but are expensive and heavy, therefore requiring extra framing as tile does. Wood shingles or shake can give your home a classic, rustic look, but fire codes may prohibit this in some areas. Mold can also be a concern. Finally, synthetic products are now available as well, including rubber, plastic, and polymers. These materials are typically heavier, more durable, and more expensive than natural materials are, but since they haven’t been around as long, the quality can vary.
